The second #CLChat took place on Sunday 11th September and created an animated discussion on the nuances of Goal Setting in sport. It was agreed setting goals is necessary, while there was varied feeling about whether team or individual goals are more important. Different coaches suggested a mixture of methods for ensuring adherence to the goals with most agreeing the goals had to be constantly evaluated and being made visual helped.

Every coach agreed goal setting is of vital importance with no one believing Goal Setting shouldn’t be done. The SMART mnemonic was mentioned twice with individuals agreeing goals needed to be thoroughly discussed before becoming ‘official’.

The chat then progressed onto whether individual or team goals were more important – this is where the discussion really heated up! Some said individual goals first, then team. Others said team goals are more relevant when it comes to team sports, and some said both were equal in ranking.

Some of the coaches who suggested both were of equal significance also opined that the focus may at times switch between individual or team.

Those who suggested team goals should take greater prominence said everyone involved in the coaching process need to have aligned goals to ensure they’re working together.

The last part of the chat discussed how you get athletes or teams to stay on track with their goals. It was generally agreed an evaluation process needs to take place. Some mentioned goals should be assessed on a weekly basis, others suggested every six weeks and some proposed specific points should be agreed on before the season commences. Interestingly two recommended the use of posters.

The chat was certainly lively and it was brilliant to get comments from such a diverse coaching group. As you can see there were at times a difference of opinions but we’d like to think this is healthy.
