Eastbourne College

Eastbourne College look to simplify Match Review and increase player ownership in a player-led development programme.

The College is one of the UK’s leading independent co-educational day and boarding schools offering academic excellence in a superb coastal location.

The rugby programme, under the leadership of Mr Oliver Torri, continue to strive towards being recognised as one of England’s leading school sides, both in terms of participation and excellence.

Rugby is the core boys sport playing a very strong rugby fixture card throughout the South East.

With a close link to the Harlequins Academy, Eastbourne has three representatives for the 2018 Harlequins Development Programme.

Recognising the importance that Rugby is just one medium of possible learning for the boys at the school, all matches are filmed and uploaded to Coach Logic. The boys are then asked to tag and clip the game and encouraged to get involved in discussion around the video.

The coaching staff are keen to develop a player-lead approach when it comes to their analysis: “If they don’t do it themselves then they don’t really understand the ‘why’. Getting them to analyse videos themselves develops this understanding.”

Having just completed a workshop with the Eastbourne pupils we’re keen to see how they can further progress this coming season.

Video makes a huge difference to pupils for learning. In my 15 years of teaching I have found that nothing accelerated learning more than explanation through video. If they don’t do it themselves then they don’t really understand the ‘why’. Getting them to analyse videos themselves develops this understanding. The Coach Logic Mobile App has made this accessible and a very good resource for the players to have.
