Coaches commit themselves to professional development of some description as often as they can. Some coaches will go outside the parameters of their own sport and look for things from other sports, some may look to have professional dialogue with other coaches and share ideas, grassroots level coaches may look to the professional environment for the latest techniques, strategies or rugby playing styles. Good coaches will tell you it’s a commitment ongoing learning to strive to improve or stay ahead of the game.
We have all had those coaches when things don’t quite go to plan; get upset; actually that’s every coach. Don’t throw those silly flick passes, that wasn’t the option there, reduce the high risk plays!
When you look through successful teams; there are a number of factors that contribute towards their success. Dedication, hard-working players and coaches, good tactics, a healthy training environment, good leadership, effective strength and conditioning – the list can go on. You would say most sides possess all of the above traits in any sport, however what is it that splits teams from being good to being great? Sometimes it can be hard to explain or articulate into words. I believe the answer is ‘X-Factor’ or players who possess ‘X-Factor’, but how do you define this term?
Sometimes people achieve their potential, players rise to the top and when you know how hard the climb was you feel immense pride for them. Being aware of the struggles and obstacles they had to overcome to achieve their goal means you only wish them success after success.
