Case Study - FAI
INTRODUCTION
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) is redefining the landscape of coach development by placing the learner at the heart of the experience. Through a strategic partnership with Coach Logic, the FAI has integrated SAM (Session Analysis Model) to bridge the gap between theory and practice. By combining video analysis with objective data, the FAI is empowering coaches - from grassroots to UEFA Pro License levels - to gain deep insights into their coaching behaviours and accelerate their professional growth.
BACKGROUND
As the governing body for football (soccer) in the Republic of Ireland, the FAI is responsible for the education of a vast network of coaches. Each year, the association develops between 12,000 and 13,000 grassroots coaches and 500 to 600 UEFA-licensed coaches, while engaging with thousands more informally.
Under the leadership of Niall O’Regan, Head of Education and Development, and Craig Sexton, Education and Development Manager, the FAI launched a new holistic education strategy. The goal was to shift away from purely formal qualifications toward a continuous, learner-centred model focused on individual development, mentorship, and objective self-reflection.
CHALLENGES
- Scale vs. personalisation: With over 15,000 coaches engaging in education annually, providing 1-on-1 on-site mentorship for every learner was logistically and financially impossible.
- Subjectivity in feedback: Traditional coach observation often relied on the "subjective" eye of the developer. This could lead to discrepancies between what the coach thought happened and what actually occurred during a session.
- Delayed reflection: In high-performance environments, the time lag between a training session and the feedback loop can dilute the learning impact. The FAI needed a way to turn around content rapidly to facilitate "hot" and "cold" reflections (more on that below).
- Geographic barriers: Coordinating physical site visits for coach developers across the country created a bottleneck in the support system.
SOLUTION
The FAI implemented Coach Logic SAM as the trusted technology partner for its coach development pathway. The tool provides a digital community of practice where video, audio, and data converge:
- Objective reference points: SAM allows coaches and developers to move past "I think" to "I know." By tagging specific interactions, coaches can see measurable data on speaking time, feedback types, and session management, while being able to refer back to video as the ultimate ‘source of truth’.
- Rapid turnaround: During the United Soccer Coaches Convention, FAI demonstrated the ability to capture audio and video of an hour-long coaching session (featuring U21 Head Coach Jim Crawford) and have it processed within SAM in just 20 minutes. Something FAI Education and Development Manager, Craig Sexton, remarked was “unbelievable”.
- The "Hot & Cold" reflection model:
- Hot Reflection: Immediate feedback shared between the coach and developer right after the session.
- Cold Reflection: A "deep dive" using SAM’s objective video evidence to analyse behaviours and player interactions in detail the following morning.
IMPACT
- Eliminating the mentorship bottleneck: SAM removes the pressure of needing a person on-site for every session. It allows the FAI to scale its support to thousands of coaches, ensuring equal opportunities for development regardless of location.
- Enhanced self-awareness: The tool provides coaches with a real “deep dive" into how they are perceived by others. This objective insight fosters a more honest and productive conversation between the coach and the coach developer.
- Data-driven progress: By embracing AI and measurable reference points, the FAI can now track a coach’s progress over time using tangible data, rather than anecdotal evidence.
- Future-proofing education: As the FAI looks toward 2026 and beyond, the integration of SAM aligns with their KPIs for individual development and mentorship, shifting the focus from "getting a badge" to "becoming a better educator."
Niall O’Regan, Head of Education and Development, FAICoach Logic SAM takes away all of the barriers we have from an educational sense. At the heart of everything we do is the individual coach development and now we have the tool to give to all of our coaches, to allow them to do that.
