Case Study - Rugby Europe
INTRODUCTION
Rugby Europe, the governing body for rugby union across the continent, has been utilising Coach Logic for a number of years to support coach education across its member unions. Most recently, Rugby Europe has embedded SAM (Session Analysis Model) within its coach development framework to strengthen the delivery of the World Rugby coaching qualifications and enhance the quality assurance of Coach Developers delivering these programmes.
A strong example of this approach in action was the launch of the Women’s Coaching Academy, an initiative developing the women’s game, delivered alongside the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England.
Rugby Europe continues to utilise SAM to provide a support network for female coaches. This initiative is bridging the gap between isolated national coaching environments and a collaborative, pan-European community of practice, ensuring that the next generation of female leaders has the objective insights needed to excel.
BACKGROUND
Launched in Manchester with support from World Rugby, UK Sport, and the RFU, the Women’s Coaching Academy brought together 15 trailblazing coaches from diverse member nations. The four-day intensive program was designed not just as a certification course, but as a career-shaping experience.
Under the guidance of Charlie Brown (Regional Training Manager at Rugby Europe), the academy focuses on high-performance culture and live game analysis. However, the true challenge lay in maintaining this momentum once the coaches returned to their respective home countries.
CHALLENGES
- The "loneliness" of coaching: Many female coaches, especially in developing rugby nations, work in isolation with limited access to local peer networks or high-level mentorship.
- Geographic & language barriers: With over 40 member unions speaking different languages and operating at varying levels of development, creating a unified standard for coach education was historically difficult.
- Subjective self-reflection: Transitioning from a player to a coach often involves overcoming personal biases. Coaches frequently struggle to objectively evaluate their own effectiveness in session management and player interaction.
- Sustainability of learning: Short, in-person workshops often suffer from a "drop-off" effect once participants return home and lack immediate, ongoing feedback.
SOLUTION
To solve the problem of distance and subjectivity, Rugby Europe integrated Coach Logic SAM as their digital support tool for coach development.
- AI-powered session analysis: SAM automatically analyses recorded training sessions, providing coaches with data on their questioning techniques, the volume of positive vs. corrective feedback, and total speaking time, to name a few.
- Remote mentorship: Coaches film their sessions locally using simple mobile devices and upload them to the platform. World Rugby-appointed mentors then provide remote, timestamped feedback, eliminating the need for expensive and time-consuming travel.
- Breaking language barriers: By using video as a common language, SAM allows coaches from different cultures to share "best practices" and "moments that matter" visually, fostering a cross-border community.
- Structured reflection cycles: The tool encourages coaches to analyse "who they are as a coach" by comparing their intentions (e.g. wanting to facilitate rather than command) against the reality of their filmed performance.
IMPACT
- From event to continuous support: What began as a four-day Academy has evolved into an ongoing digital support structure, ensuring sustained development, accountability and access to wider networks.
- Increased coaching confidence: By reviewing their own sessions through video and objective data, coaches report greater awareness of their communication style, session flow and leadership presence.
- Equitable access to expertise: Smaller unions now receive the same level of development support as larger, more established unions - without the cost and logistical barriers of travel.
- Stronger coach developer standards: Rugby Europe can monitor and support Coach Developers delivering World Rugby programmes, enhancing consistency and safeguarding quality.
- Open coaching culture: By sharing both successes and "things to improve" in a judgment-free digital space, Rugby Europe is driving a new, transparent culture that prioritises coach welfare and professional growth.
Charlie Brown, Regional Training Manager at Rugby EuropeOur ultimate goal is to support the various rugby unions across Europe to have the tools to support their communities at an appropriate level. What excites me most is the diversity of this group... all united by a shared ambition to lead in the women's game. Through our digital partners, Coach Logic SAM, we can now provide the resources and support to help them reflect on their coaching long after they leave the classroom.
Participants of the Women’s Coaching Academy also received access to the Coach Logic Teams platform to help support their players with video analysis and team collaboration. Find out more about the Teams tool and sign up for a free trial.
